The largest quantum volume

THIS ONE IS FINISHED. It stopped being a frontier on 2026-09-11: superseded. The page stays, because what it recorded still happened.

The reading was wrong from the day it was taken. The list this frontier reads ranks every manufacturer, and the reading took the newest row rather than the largest one: 32,768, claimed in May 2026, was the most recent figure in the table and not the highest in it. The highest was Quantinuum's 8,388,608, which had been sitting in the same list since 2025 and is two hundred and fifty-six times larger. The definition was sound, so it continues under the same name on the edge page, with a source that does not have to change hands every time the record does. This page keeps the number it got wrong, in public, where the correction can be seen against it.

32,768 quantum volume

Held by Alpine Quantum Technologies LYNX. Set 2026-05-05. Written down here 2026-09-07.

Counting qubits is a poor way to compare quantum computers, because a machine with many unreliable qubits can do less than one with a few good ones. Quantum volume was proposed to fix that. It asks for the largest square circuit a machine can run and still be right more often than not, so error rates, connectivity and qubit count all collapse into a single figure. It doubles, and is therefore always quoted as a power of two; the current record is two to the fifteenth. This is the only frontier on this page whose best cross-manufacturer list is maintained by volunteers rather than by the field itself, which makes it the weakest-sourced number here. That is recorded rather than smoothed over, and a better source would replace it.

That description was written when this frontier was opened, on 2026-09-07, and is never rewritten. Where it and the number above it disagree, the number is the reading and the description is history.

What counts
The highest quantum volume claimed by any manufacturer for a working machine. Quantum volume only - not qubit counts, which are not comparable between machines.
What moves it
A manufacturer announces a higher quantum volume. It doubles, so the next step is 65,536.

The program reads it from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_quantum_processors, which is the same figure in a form a script can parse.
