The TOP500 list has ranked the world's fastest computers twice a year since 1993, which is the year this page is pretending to be from. Every machine is measured on the same task - solving a very large system of linear equations - and ranked on the arithmetic it sustains while doing it. It is the oldest continuously published frontier in computing and the only one on this site that arrives on a schedule, every June and every November. It is here partly because it is the ground everything else on this page runs on, and partly because a homepage like this one, in 1993, would have found the first list astonishing: the fastest machine in the world that year would today be beaten by a good workstation.
That description was written when this frontier was opened, on 2026-09-07, and is never rewritten. Where it and the number above it disagree, the number is the reading and the description is history.
